As English teachers, we’re always looking for engaging ways to help our students develop language skills. One of my favorite teaching methods is Project-Based Learning (PBL) because it allows students to actively participate in their learning process. Today, I want to share a recent project that turned out to be a huge success: Our Instagram Project for English Language Lovers!
The Idea Behind the Project
The goal of this project was to create an Instagram account dedicated to English language learning. Students were tasked with creating posts featuring new idioms. This allowed them to dive into the English language in a fun, creative, and interactive way.
How I Got My Students Involved
To ensure structure and quality, I designed a clear step-by-step process:
Preparing the Idioms List. I curated a list of 100 useful idioms that I wanted my students to work with. These idioms were chosen based on their frequency in everyday English and their usefulness for learners.
Splitting into Groups. I divided the class into five groups, assigning each group a set of 20 idioms to work on. This not only fostered collaboration but also made the workload manageable.
Creating Content. Each group had to prepare 20 slides, each featuring one idiom, along with its definition, usage example, and visual representation. The idea was to make the posts both educational and visually appealing.
Introducing Canva. Since design plays a huge role in engagement, I introduced my students to Canva, a user-friendly design tool perfect for creating social media content. I provided a quick tutorial on how to use templates, adjust fonts, and add visuals to enhance their slides.
Setting Deadlines. Clear deadlines were set to ensure the project progressed smoothly. Each group had a week to finalize their slides, followed by a peer-review session where students gave each other constructive feedback.
Posting and Engagement. Once all slides were ready, we started posting on our dedicated Instagram account.
The Results? Absolutely Amazing!
This project exceeded my expectations. Not only did my students enjoy working on it, but they also learned valuable skills in language acquisition, digital content creation, teamwork, and social media engagement. Seeing their excitement as they shared their work with a real audience was incredibly rewarding.
